Four treasure hunters discovered a 14th-century hoard of 557 rare gold and silver coins worth an estimated £150,000 in a field in Buckinghamshire.

The hoard includes 12 ornately decorated silver Edward I and II coins and 12 rare full gold coins from the time of the Black Death.

The four amateur metal detectorists – Andrew Winter, brothers Tobiasz, Mateusz Nowak, and another man Dariusz Fijalkowski – discovered the 14th-century hoard in Buckinghamshire while taking a part in a local metal detector rally.

It took them four days to find all the 557 rare gold and silver coins worth an estimated £150,000. The four metal detectorists slept in a tent during the excavations.

They first found just 12 ornately decorated silver Edward I and II coins but continued digging up.

Mr. Mateusz said: “It felt unreal. After finding the hoard, and then clearing the area, we had to extend the search twice more because we were finding so much. It was a miracle moment after moment for everyone.”

Mr. Tobiasz Nowak added: “I can’t even imagine how we got so lucky. It was the best weekend of my life. I’ll remember it my whole life.”

Mr. Winter said: “I swung around my machine and all the silver coins were coming in at number 16 on the screen – this indicates a hammered silver coin.”

“The other signal I got was a 21. It went ting, ting, ting and sounds completely different to anything else. I shouted ‘gold, gold gold!”

The rare coins are currently kept in a museum. The 14th-century hoard of 557 rare gold and silver coins will be sold and the earnings will be divided between its finders and the landowner.
