Wolf and bear strike up a unique partnership as Finnish photographer documented them hunting together and sharing a meal on several nights.
It is very unlikely for a wolf and a bear to be friends but photographer Lassi Rautiainen managed to capture the unique friendship of a male brown bear and a female grey wolf!
The two went everywhere together, hunt together, and share their meals with each other.
After a difficult day’s hunting, the two could be seen eating their spoils together as the sun set over the wilderness.
Now 62, Lassi Rautiainen said to Daily Mail in 2013: “It’s very unusual to see a bear and a wolf getting on like this.
“From what I could find, it’s actually the first time, at least in Europe, where such a friendship was developed.”
Lassi continued: “No-one can know exactly why or how the young wolf and bear became friends. think that perhaps they were both alone and they were young and a bit unsure of how to survive alone…It is nice to share rare events in the wild that you would never expect to see.”
“It seems to me that they feel safe being together,” Lassi added.
Rare photos show how the two animals would sit down and enjoy their meal together while enjoying the beautiful view of the landscape for at least two hours.
The bear and his pal wolf were seen meeting up every night and would stay in each other’s company from 8pm to 4am.
“When I realised that no one had observed bears and wolves living near each other and becoming friends in Europe, I concentrated more and more on getting pictures to show what can happen in nature.
“Then I came across these two and knew that it made the perfect story. It’s very unusual to see a bear and a wolf getting on like this.
“It is nice to share rare events in the wild that you would never expect to see.”
