Cheyenne Potts and her husband Michael were so excited to meet their baby.
Like other expectant parents, the only thing they wanted was for their baby to be born healthy and happy.
But as Cheyenne’s due date grew closer, they received some terrible news. Doctors told them that their unborn baby was ‘broken and breaking.’
The parents were also told that their baby would probably die before her due date, and even if baby Leo survive, he would not be able to live longer than one week.
Leo’s grandmother shared the full story with Love What Matters, saying the little boy was diagnosed with Osteogenesis Imperfecta, also known as ‘brittle bone disease.’
The condition makes the bones very weak and can easily break. Other symptoms include loose joints, respiratory problems, and hearing loss.
When doctors diagnosed Leo with the condition, they told his parents to get an abortion.
“We decided to do our best to plan as though the doctors were wrong. Talk amongst ourselves about what life with Leo might be like. We spent the next 4 months in this manner,” they said.
The family prepared for Leo’s birth and when the special day finally came, he was born weighing 5lbs. 11oz. That’s when Leo started to destroy the doctors’ expectations and defy the odds.
“Leo Alexander came into this world. Crying, alive, and doing it on his own! The doctors were wrong! Was he perfect? No, he was perfectly imperfect, and he was HERE. Alive, and a fighter. That day, Leo began to show the world that he would write his own book.”
The doctors were surprised to see that despite his condition, Leo was strong. They said that he would need to stay in the NICU for six months but he only stayed there for less than three weeks before he was allowed to go home.
Leo’s grandmother admitted that there were many ups and downs but she said the good moments are all worth it and that they’re all grateful for each second they spend with their brave boy.
“We were asked about moments that stand out to us, and to be honest, I can’t think of just a few things that stand out. Leo’s entire life stands out. He is an amazingly happy spirit and we see him touch and inspire people everywhere he goes.”
