President Donald Trump had attempted to appear on Sunday night at the fifth game of the World Series, but had been seen and been booed at, with chants of ‘lock him up’ echoing through the stadium.
To put this in context, earlier that very day he had announced that the U.S forces had attacked the place where Islamic State leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi had remained hidden before he was killed in a raid in Northeast Syria.
This would have been deemed a military success considering the latter was the most wanted enemy of the united states and its allies, however that did not seem to sway the crowd.
Although the president had exhibited a moment of bipartisan comity, it did not exempt him from every other terrible thing the crowd knew he had done.
At first, he and First Lady Melania Trump had taken their seat in a lower-tier box when the game had started. His presence had not been announced, but baseball fans in front of them had seen them.
Some had even smiled and waved at him. It was at the end of the third inning that a salute to the US service members was displayed across the video screens, and everyone throughout the stadium cheered.
However, once the cameras were on Trump and his plus one, the cheers devolved into mass booing and heckling, where people chanted ‘lock him up!’
The footage from the NBC cameras had captured Trump’s smile dropping to a grimace the moment the boos started. Trump put up a strong upper lip and continued to smile and wave afterwards despite the hostility from the crowd.
Despite his seeming indifference, the heckling continued throughout the game, where two fans behind the home plate had displayed a sign saying ‘VETERENS FOR IMPEACHMENT’ at some point.
We do not know if the sign was read by Trump, who had left the game by 10pm. President Trump’s staff has tried to protect him from events where he might be received with hostile reception, but he is known to be a fan of the New York Yankees and the Mets.
