Social media users have gone on a bashing rampage after a woman shared a picture of ‘sexist’ greetings cards she came across in a shop.
Natasha Hodgson, an artistic director, shared the photo on Twitter and captioned it: “Ahh yes the two sides of heterosexuality, commerce and toil.”
As seen on the photo, the greeting card in pink color reads: “You’re the kind of girl I’d buy flowers for,” while the blue greeting card reads: “You’re the kind of boy I’d make a sandwich for.”
Soon after the photo was shared, Twitter users slammed the cards saying they are suggesting that “girls should make sandwiches for boys.”
In a matter of days, the tweet has been liked over 20,000 times and shared more than 5,000 times.
Responding to the thread with their own examples of modern sexism, people shared images that reinforce damaging gender stereotypes in a similar way as those greeting cards.
“Did someone from the 1950s drop their cards through a portal to the modern day or something?” one person wrote.
“What if I want to make the sandwich for my wife and have her select the flowers for me instead? Conversely, what if I wanted to cook dinner with her? This doesn’t compute,” another one added.
“Also: baby books for girls & boys. Because obviously, babies require separate, gender-specific reading material at this tender age. Thank goodness that the girl cover is all about pwetty flowers & butterfwies! Couldn’t have them getting one with a car on the front, ‘ey! Phew!” one woman wrote.
