It was in January when Archer was severely burned after the house where he lived suddenly caught on fire.
When firefighters arrived, they saw the Alaskan dog covered in flames!
The scared pooch ran when firemen tried to rescue him. Fortunately, he was found near the ocean and was rushed to the vet.
There are not many emergency vet services in Haines, Alaska, a remote area where Archer lives. He took a 7-hour car ride to the nearest vet that could help him with his serious burns.
After the severely burned pooch reached a stable condition, he went back to his home then started another long road to recovery with Dr. Michelle Oakley, the star of the Nat Geo Wild Show ‘Dr. Oakley, Yukon Vet’.
Speaking about Archer’s treatment, Dr. Oakley told PEOPLE: “We started with bandage changes and set up burn unit in my office in town, since we needed a sterile environment where you can keep everything clean.”
Dr. Oakley also contacted a burn specialist at the University of California for further advice. She was told about the skins from tilapia being placed on burns to increase the process of healing.
Strong Archer was then covered in fish skin, giving him a scaly look but earned him the title ‘Archer the Dragonslayer.’
“The relief was instant,” Dr. Oakley expressed.
Dr. Oakley provided her services without charges and people of the community worked together to help cover Archer’s other medical costs, which included laser therapy and a few operations.
Fish skins and all that love transformed Archer from a burned with painful skin and no fur to a completely healed, happy dog, who only has a small bald spot left on his face.
Dr. Oakley gives a lot of credit to Archer’s friendly and fighting spirit! Despite having to go through plenty of pain and discomfort, the pooch always wags his tail.
