Morrisons has offered to give away 125,000 paper bags of wonky carrots this Christmas.
The supermarket says the families who want to leave out refreshments for Santa, Rudolph and the rest of the reindeer will get the veg.
On December 21, the carrots will be delivered out from the entrances of Morrisons’ 493 stores across the UK on Saturday. Despite of being oversized, misshapen and scarred the wonky carrots taste pleasant. It will be in bags labelled “Carrots for Rudolph.”
Wonky carrots are actually cheaper than normal carrots as it costs 50p per kilogram at Morrisons stores. Morrisons say ‘’it sells 1.6 million bags of carrots in the last three weeks of December but wonky sales only account for between 10 per cent and 15 per cent.’’
Morrisons is in the hope that donation will benefit British farmers who have harvested more wonky carrots this Autumn.
Alastair Ferguson, carrot farmer for Morrisons at Strawsons Farm said: “The heavy rainfall this year has made harvesting very challenging.”
“We’ve plenty of standard carrots for Christmas dinner – but also have a lot of wonky carrots.”
“Carrots for Rudolph is helpful because it introduces customers to wonky veg, finds these carrots a home, and stops them being wasted.”
The supermarket expects the giveaway will introduce more families to wonky veg and inspire people to purchase more of it.
Morrisons will also be providing customers one orange per child to go in their Christmas stockings on Sunday, December 22. The parents will get oranges along with a story-card telling the history of the tradition so that parents can tell the story to their children.
What a cute little idea for the upcoming Christmas day!
