When an expectant mother was told she had cancer, she knew she had to make a heartbreaking decision.
And like other mothers who had to choose between their life or their child’s, Heidi Loughlin chose to delay her cancer treatment to save her baby.
However, Heidi’s baby girl passed away at only 8 days old.
It’s been four years since baby Ally died and now, Heidi has shared an emotional tribute to her. She wrote on Twitter: “Four years ago today, you were born.
“A huge beam of light in what was a dark time for our family.
“However, life is cruel sometimes and you lived for just eight days.
“But my darling you still lived for eight days and for that I’ll always be grateful. Happy birthday to our beautiful girl Ally.”
Since her baby’s death, Heidi was told that her aggressive breast cancer is incurable.
But the inspirational mother, who has two sons Tait and Noah, is “refusing to give cancer permission to ruin her entire life.”
“Ally is a huge part of our lives, whose empty space is felt every day,” she told the Mirror Online.
“But as I continue to defy the odds of incurable inflammatory breast cancer, I know that a huge part of my strength comes from my love for her and her brothers.
“It’s what focuses my mind, makes me determined to keep going when I’m broken and to ensure that her memory is kept very much alive within our family.”
Heidi was three months pregnant when she was diagnosed with cancer in 2015. She was determined to give birth to their third child, Ally, even though it meant delaying her own cancer treatment.
“My mother instincts kicked in where you do what you need to to protect your baby,” she expressed. “There was also a feeling of guilt about my two boys and ‘what if I am not here for them’ and I just thought ‘how do I say goodbye to my children’ it was absolutely horrific.
“But I knew I couldn’t live with that feeling of letting her go.”
Ally was born a healthy baby but she suffered two brain bleeds because of an infection at only 5 days old. Despite medics’ efforts to save her, she passed away three days later.
Heidi now wants to help raise awareness of the disease by sharing her story.
