A toddler has tragically passed away from sepsis after his doctors ignored parents’ warnings and told them they know what to do because they’re “professionals.
”
1-year-old Jack Sands was staying in the hospital with his parents Gemma and John in order to have a necessary surgery on his skull.
After a short recovery, the doctors discharged the boy, who was just days from his second birthday, and told the family they could go home.
However, shortly after the procedure, the boy developed a suspicious-looking rash that looked like a symptom of sepsis according to the parents who googled the possible causes.
Nevertheless, the parents were told by the doctors that the boy was fine and that they should head home.
“We’re the professionals. We know what we’re doing,” they allegedly said.
Unfortunately, however, the parents’ fears turned out to be justified and the toddler has tragically passed away from sepsis days later.
“I hope one of the lessons learned is that we should listen to parents because they are the specialists in the care of their children,” Surgeon Paul Chumas said during the inquest.
As heartbroken mum Gemma added, the boy’s skin changed colors and he developed diarrhea. “My dad was telling the nurses about this, but nobody listened,” she said.
Having no one else to turn to, the desperate parents searched the symptoms on the internet only to find out they could have been caused by sepsis.
Sadly, however, it was too late for little Jack by the time the doctors finally considered the diagnosis of sepsis and put the boy on antibiotics.
As an inquest into the passing revealed, the boy was suffering from “an overwhelming bacterial infection” which developed in the area where he had surgery.
After the incident, the staff was forced to undergo additional training to help them recognize the symptoms of sepsis.
