A growing number of millennials are forced to undergo surgeries to the wrist thanks to the trend of taking selfies according to the experts.
As Dr. Raj Ragoowansi, a medical expert and a plastic surgeon from London, England, revealed, he’s seen plenty of cases in which individuals aged from 18 to 35 have developed a painful condition similar to carpal tunnel syndrome.
As the doctor said, severe cases of the condition require surgery whereas the increase in such cases is obvious in millennials as a result of bending wrist inwards in order to take selfies.
“I’ve seen a 30% to 40% increase in patients, men and women, between the ages of 18 and 35 presenting with carpal tunnel syndrome, which I rarely used to see,” Dr. Ragoowansi told The Sunday Times.
To treat the condition, the doctors may recommend anything from medication to reduce inflammation to wearing a brace to surgery.
“It’s not just selfies but texting too, about how you hold the phone and type. We’re also seeing ‘iPhone thumb,’ whereby if you keep on using your thumb, you will get thumb-based pain, due to joint or tendon inflammation,” he added.
Previously, in 2018, social media influencer Kim Kardashian has spoken out and claimed she was diagnosed with ‘selfie wrist’ after taking dozens of photos on a regular basis.
In addition, she has also claimed she would take a break from taking selfies in the future as she allegedly “doesn’t really like them.”
As the star later on revealed in Keeping Up with the Kardashians, she was ordered by the doctors to stop taking selfies because they contributed to her development of carpal tunnel syndrome.
