The world’s oldest living husband and wife have just celebrated their 80th wedding anniversary after tying the knot in 1939.
105-year-old Charlotte Henderson and 106-year-old John Henderson not only have a combined age of 211 years but have also been married for an astounding 80 years.
The couple from Austin, Texas, has also been officially recognized as the oldest living married couple by the Guinness Book of Records.
“They are a wonderful couple, and an example of a very happy couple – glad to be around each other, travel together, and live life,” great-nephew Jason said in an interview with KXAN.
“They’ll tell you stories of the past, but they don’t dwell on the past.”
John and Charlotte met at The University of Texas in the mid 1930s. After falling in love with each other, the couple waited around five years before tying the knot in 1939, shortly after World War II started.
“They’re just gracious, nice, kind people. They’re the salt of the earth,” one of the couple’s common friends added.
While times haven’t always been easy for the couple, their love for each other continued to flourish for decades.
“Live life in moderation and be cordial to your spouse,” John suggested when asked about their secret to a long marriage.
In addition, the couple makes sure to stay in good shape by exercising on a regular basis. They have moved together in a home for the aged in 2009, whereas John still attends at least one football game at the University of Texas per year.
