Firemen fighting bushfires in New South Wales have discovered a hidden field of huge cannabis crops.
The NSW Rural Fire Service was working near Tahmoor when firefighters stumbled across the field of marijuana plants. They took photos with the plants and shared them online.
Their discovery was made near where two other firemen died when their fire truck crashed.
Volunteers 32-year-old Geoffrey Keaton and 36-year-old Andrew O’Dwyer, who were both fathers, tragically lost their lives when their truck rolled off the road after it hit a fallen tree.
The RFS shared photos of them on Twitter and wrote: “The 2 firefighters killed in a vehicle accident last night are Deputy Captain Geoffrey Keaton 32yrs & Firefighter Andrew O’Dwyer 36yrs, both from Horsley Park Brigade. Our thoughts are with their family, friends & fellow brigade members.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison also remembered them as heroes.
Mr. Morrison said in a statement: “They were bravely defending their communities with an unmatched spirit and a dedication that will forever set them apart amongst our most courageous Australians.
“Their sacrifice and service saving lives and saving properties will be forever remembered. I wish those injured all the best in their recovery.”
The RFS added: “Another three firefighters have received injuries as a result of the accident. The Service’s thoughts are with all the firefighter’s family, friends and fellow brigade members. This is an absolutely devastating event in what has already been an incredibly difficult day and fire season.”
It is feared around 40 homes were lost in Bargo, Balmoral, Buxton, and surrounding areas as the strong winds and fire tore through the Wollondilly Shire.
