Domino’s Pizza’s Chief Financial Officer passed away in a snorkeling accident while on a vacation with his loved ones.
CFO David Bauernfeind died while spending time with his family on the island of Mauritius, according to Mirror.
The family had arrived in Mauritius on December 19 and stayed in a hotel.
An investigating source said: “The skipper of a yacht discovered the body floating in a lagoon off Belle-Mare on Thursday morning.
“The man was confirmed dead by paramedics and his body was then transported to the Victoria Hospital in Candos.”
The source added: “An autopsy took place, and the cause of death was found to be asphyxiation caused by drowning. His wife has identified the body, and other next of kin in Britain are being informed.”
In a statement to PEOPLE, Domino’s CEO David Wild said: “We are all deeply shocked and saddened by this tragic news.
“On behalf of our Board, our colleagues and our franchisees, we send our heartfelt sympathies to David’s wife Nicolette and daughter Ornella as well as his wider family and friends.”
Wild added: “David was hugely liked and deeply respected for his dedication and sharp intellect amongst Domino’s colleagues. He was a force for good within the business and will be greatly missed.”
It was in 2018 when Bauernfeind started working in the company, according to his LinkedIn account. Before joining the Domino’s Pizza Group, he previously worked at the technology company Gooch & Housego and also the magazine and newspaper distributor Connect Group PLC.
Mauritius boasts many breathtaking white sand beaches but undercurrents can be strong and usually take swimmers by surprise. In 2017, the nation made headlines after a teen drowned while swimming with dolphins.
