President Donald Trump has signed the bill enacted by Congress to raise the age limit for buying all kinds of tobacco products from 18 to 21.
According to the US Food and Drug Administration, the sale of tobacco products such as cigarettes and electronic cigarettes to people younger than 21 is no longer legal.
The controversial provision to increase the age limit was a part of the massive spending bill that President Trump signed on December 20.
“This is a major step in protecting the next generation of children from becoming addicted to tobacco products,” Dr. Stephen Hahn of Food and Drug Administration wrote in a tweet.
Recently, Trump has approved two massive spending bills totaling $1.4 trillion.
Besides the civilian bill, the POTUS has officially marked the birth of the Space Force by signing a $738 billion spending deal that will bring forth “the sixth branch of the United States armed forces” according to the president.
“With my signature today you will witness the birth of the Space Force. And that will be now officially the sixth branch of the United States armed forces,” Mr. Trump said in his speech.
The deal was signed just moments before the president took off to Mar-a-Lago to celebrate the festive season with his family.
Speaking of the revolutionary deal as he addressed the crowd, Trump added:
“That’s an all-time record in the history of our country. What’s the good of a budget if you don’t have the best military in the world.
“Think of that, we will create a brand new American military service – that’s such a momentous statement […] That’s a big moment and we’re all here for it.
“Space. There’s going to be a lot of things happening in space. Because space is the world’s newest war-fighting domain.”
As the POTUS added, the decision is partially based on the possibility that “grave threats to our national security” could origin in the space.
“American superiority in space is absolutely vital – we’re leading, but we’re not leading by enough, but very shortly we’ll be leading by a lot,” Trump explained.
