A woman was left furious after her manager told her she should remove her hijab or go home after she appeared at her work wearing religious headwear.
22-year-old Stephanae Coleman, aka Folake Adebola, who had been working at a Chicken Express branch in Saginaw, Texas, was scolded by her boss after wearing a hijab to work.
As Coleman claimed, she had just recently converted to a Muslim and decided to start wearing a hijab while at her workplace.
However, the young woman’s manager told her religion has nothing to do with work and ordered her to remove the headwear or go home.
“Your job is your job. Your job has nothing to do with religion. The job requires a specific uniform,” the boss said in a video taken by Coleman.
“[The hijab] is not a part of the uniform; you as a paid employee cannot wear it.”
After the incident, Coleman took to Twitter to complain about what had happened to her at Chicken Express.
“I converted to Islam not too long ago and I started wearing my hijab, I went to work today and was kicked out because my hijab was not a part [of] the ‘dress code’ apparently and I wasn’t allowed to wear it. Don’t come to the chicken express in Fort Worth!!” she wrote.
As the 22-year-old told CNN, she informed her manager that she was waiting for her hijab to arrive and everything was fine until she wore the headwear to work.
“In the hand book they say they have ‘equal opportunity for every religion’ so yes I FELT comfortable working there,” she added.
However, as it was revealed, the company’s guidelines state that employees can only wear “Chicken Express hats or visors” at the workplace, whereas there is no mention of any exceptions when it comes to religious headwear.
