A 24-year-old volunteer firefighter rescued a baby kangaroo from devastating blazes and pleaded with people for donations.
Sam McGlone shared the video of the incident near his hometown of Braidwood as fires threatened the region.
He was extinguishing spot fires when he saw the scared baby joey hiding under a log.
“Australia is on fire! 500 million animals have been killed,” Mr. McGlone wrote as he issued a desperate plea on social media for donations.
“I saved this little baby kangaroo it was left by its self! This is heart breaking. 10 Million acres burned. Please spread. Please donate. We need your help,” he added.
The volunteer firefighter also set up a Go Fund Me campaign to raise money for injured animals.
Mr. McGlone, an Instagrammer and YouTuber, volunteers with his brothers and has been fighting flames around the South Coast.
According to reports, it is estimated that over half a billion animals have perished in the blazes, pushing some species to brink of extinction.
One internet user commented: “He is a good man. And that little Joey is so sweet. I am so happy that he saved him. Well done to him for trying to save all the animals and get rid of the fires.”
Another wrote: “It’s likely its mother purposefully abandoned it to make a quicker escape. She would likely have another less developed Joey in her pouch already so had to balance one over the other. Hopefully she survived.”
A third said: “All these individual acts of kindness are so important- well done Sam.”
Someone else added: “Another hero saving wildlife – a kind soul. You can see the fear in the joey’s eyes, but now there is hope for this little one. Thank you Sam McGlone.”
