A new Livonia coffee shop that hires people with disabilities is soon holding its grand opening.
MI Work Matters – a nonprofit organization that provides employment opportunities to people with disabilities – is running the Anastasia and Katie’s Coffee Shop in Livonia.
The coffee shop opened in late fall and now it is holding its grand opening.
Kelly Rockwell, the president of the board of directors for the non-profit, said in a statement: “We offer more support than found in a traditional work setting.”
The coffee shop is now holding its grand opening and ribbon-cutting celebration.
Rockwell said that it is nearly impossible for people with disabilities to get a job and after they opened, they received a large number of applications.
Rockwell said: “The unemployment rate for people with disabilities is so high. Michigan has programs in the schools for 18- to 26-year-olds, some of the longest in the country. But once students age out, there are not a lot of opportunities out there.”
“Since we’ve opened, we’ve had such a large amount of applicants.
The desire for employment far exceeds what we can provide. We hope to grow over the years and partner with other businesses, too.”
“We want to give people work experience, but also the public can come in and see what our people can do and reset their stereotypes and misconceptions”, she added.
