An elderly man was promised free beer for the rest of his life after the owners found out he has been a member of their club for seven decades.

91-year-old Dennis Collins is a World War veteran who joined Wales’ Penarth Ex-Servicemen’s Club back in 1949 when he was only 21 years old.

For 70 years, Mr. Collins stayed loyal to the pub and even kept his original membership card to prove his history.

After the senior man’s story spread, the owners of the pub decided to reward Collins with a special card that will allow him to get free beer for the rest of his life.

“I was 21 years old so I joined the club and it’s been a second home ever since. You walk into a pub, and they’re strangers. You walk into a club, and everybody knows you!” the 91-year-old expressed.

As for the Penarth Ex-Servicemen’s Club, they are honored to serve the veteran who got to know the people who “founded the club nearly 100 years ago after the First World War.”

“I am personally very pleased we can do this for Dennis as he is a lovely man and he deserves recognition, especially at times like these when social clubs are struggling. Everyone agreed – it was unanimous – that he should have free beer!” Chairman Paul Galsworthy said.

“The members have supported us over the years, because we’ve kept plugging away. Although the club has seen hard times, we are now doing really well, and we look forward to celebrating our Centenary next year.”
