In a heartwarming instance, a young deaf boy was caught on camera signing ‘I love you’ to his loving mother for the first time in his life.
2-year-old PJ was born with a genetic disorder known as Treacher Collins. As his mother, Crystal Kouri, explained, the condition caused facial deformities and the loss of hearing in her son’s case.
While the Los Angeles-based Californian may not hear what others say, the boy is extremely progressive in learning sign language.
At just two years old, PJ has already surprised his mum by signing ‘I love you’ much to her amazement.
“PJ has Treacher Collins syndrome, like Auggie Pullman, the fictional character from the movie and book, Wonder,” Kouri said.
“His condition has caused him to have five major surgeries so far which have enabled him to breathe, eat, and grow normally.
“Treacher Collins syndrome has caused PJ’s ears to be underdeveloped, resulting in moderate hearing loss.”
As the proud mother added, PJ has managed to overcome his struggles and handle his surgeries like a man despite all the setbacks life threw at him.
“We began sign language immediately as a way for him to communicate with wearing his hearing aid. At the age of two, he now has a 250 word vocabulary, both verbal and sign,” Crystal said.
“Hearing him say and sign ‘I love you’ was as emotional and pivotal as the first time he signed ‘mama.’ I stopped right there in the supermarket to record him.”
