China’s president said that the country is facing a ‘grave situation’ as coronavirus accelerates.
At least one doctor passed away from the deadly virus, and the United States started to evacuate citizens from the city of Wuhan, where the virus originated.
President Xi Jinping spoke after an emergency meeting to warn that the spread of coronavirus is accelerating. A video emerged showing doctors collapsing at hospitals as the virus outbreak continues to infect the world.
According to state media CCTV, 13 people more in Hubei province, the center of the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak, passed away due to the virus on January 25. There were also 323 new confirmed cases of infections and one death from the infection in the province of Henan.
More than 1,300 people in China had been infected with coronavirus, which has also been detected in Japan, Thailand, Singapore, Vietnam, Nepal, Taiwan, South Korea, and the United States.
According to official news agency Xinhua, President Xi said: “Faced with the grave situation of an accelerating spread of the new coronavirus […] it is necessary to strengthen the centralised and unified leadership of the Party Central Committee.”
This comes after 62-year-old Liang Wudong, a retired doctor but wanted to help treat patients in Wuhan, passed away from coronavirus.
Around 1,000 US citizens in the city were set to evacuate on a 230 seater charter flight.
China will suspend both overseas and domestic Chinese group tours as it increases efforts to contain the deadly virus, according to state media.
All overseas and domestic group tour services from Chinese travel agencies will also be suspended.
Wuhan, a city of 11 million people, has been in lockdown, with checkpoints blocking the main roads leading out of the city and all flights canceled.
