Thai medics have seen promising results after treating a coronavirus patient with two antiviral drugs usually used for treating HIV and flu.
The patient was in a ‘serious condition’ when doctors tested the drug mix. According to Bloomberg, the patient was declared ‘disease-free’ within 48 hours.
Originally for treating influenza and HIV, the drugs were a success, according to a briefing given by Dr. Kriangsak Attipornwanich.
The country has 19 confirmed cases of the deadly virus and 11 people are still in hospital while others returned home.
This breakthrough comes after the manufacturers of a cleaning product, Dettol, clarified that their product wouldn’t be effective when it comes to killing coronavirus.
One customer saw that on the back of a Dettol bottle, the description read: “Kills cold viruses (Human Coronavirus and RSV).”
However, the company said that the description referred to milder strains which it has been proven to kill.
The company said in a statement to The Sun: “RB has become aware of speculation about Dettol products and the novel 2019-nCoV coronavirus.
“As this is an emerging outbreak RB, like all manufacturers, doesn’t yet have access to the new virus (2019-nCoV) for testing and, as a result, are not yet in a position to confirm levels of effectiveness against the new strain.
“Our products have been tested against other coronaviruses (such as MERS-CoV and SARS-CoV) and have been found to kill those.”
Thai’s success comes as the first coronavirus patient died outside of China.
The 44-year-old man from Wuhan, China was admitted to San Lazaro Hospital in the Philippines as he suffered from a cough, a sore throat and fever. His condition quickly deteriorated and he developed severe pneumonia.
The health department said: “The patient was stable and showed signs of improvement, however his condition deteriorated within his last 24 hours resulting in his demise.”
The man’s female companion was also quarantined in the Philippines after it was confirmed that she was infected.
