It’s a funny dichotomy but whenever parents are strict with their kids, the moment they become grandparents they become the complete opposite when it comes to their grandkids.
This is why grandparents have earned this reputation for spoiling their grandkids.
Perhaps it’s because grandparents realize that they’re not getting any younger and perhaps they realize that maybe they were too strict when they were young parents and now want to make up for it now that there are toddlers to play with again. Or maybe the excitement of just having a young one is too much for them to avoid spoiling the kid.

Whatever the reason, the way grandparents spoil their grandkids is sometimes exasperating for the kid’s parents.
It’s not helped by the fact that little kids always want something, whether it’s a new toy, a trip to Disneyland, or a new pet. That last one is a bit dicey because the attention span of kids tends to be short. You buy them the toy they want and a few days later they’re already tired of it.
In the case of pets, the kid is often not yet mature enough to help take care of the pet so it’s an added responsibility for the parents to make sure the pet stays happy and healthy. It’s not really a problem if the parents are also into pets but becomes an issue if not.
Most parents just say that they’ll get what the kids want “next year” or say it’s not in the budget in the hopes that it’s enough to stave off all the pleading and whining.
But six-year-old Xander Mellor, from Springfield, Illinois, was different. Like other kids, he also wanted a puppy. But unlike other kids, Xander was actually saving up for one from whatever was left of his school allowance. In fact, he had been saving up for around 18 months when his grandparents stepped in to give him an incredible gift and the little kid was understandably emotional at getting what he always wanted.
Video shows Xander being led outside as his grandparents pull in on the driveway. He’s asked to close his eyes while his grandparents get out and then the puppy is placed into his waiting arms. The look of awe on the little kid’s face was priceless and his reaction afterward even doubly so.
In this case, Xander’s grandparents can be forgiven for giving in to what the kid wanted. After all, in his own way, Xander was working for it and that was one of the best reasons for an assist from grandparents if there ever was one!
