A plane passenger has gone viral after donning over 2 kilograms of her clothes at once in order to avoid paying an excess baggage fee.
As Philippine-based Gel Rodriguez revealed, she was checking in before her flight when the airline staff told her she needed to ditch 2 kilograms from her carry-on suitcase which weighed 9 kilograms or face excess weight fee.
Refusing to get rid of her clothes or pay extra, the woman wore dozens of pieces of clothing at once before sharing her achievement with the airline staff who were then forced to accept her.
“When the airline staff at the check in counter said ‘Only seven kilos is allowed in hand luggage.’ Me: ‘No problem,’” Rodriguez said in an interview with VICE.
“I didn’t want to pay the fee for the excess baggage because it was only two kilograms.”
In the pictures she shared on social media, Gel is seen wearing layers of clothes consisting of shirts, jackets, shorts, and pants.
“It was really hot,” she added before admitting she’s not going to attempt working around excess baggage like this again.
Gel’s story went viral after she created a post tagged as #ExcessBaggageChallengeAccepted and shared her picture along with the following caption: “From 9kg to 6.5kg baggage”
As she later joked, she would come up with a better pose for the photo if she knew she was about to make the news.
Soon enough, people applauded Gel for avoiding the excess baggage fee and shared similar stories.
“I have done that before. It was extremely uncomfortable but at least I didn’t have to pay a cent,” one person said.
“How come I’ve never thought of that!? Thanks for the idea haha I’m never paying for excess weight again!” another one suggested.
