52-year-old Robert Noyes, an African American, kidnapped his ex-girlfriend, a white woman, and forced her to watch a 9-hour slavery mini-series to make her ‘understand her racism.
’
Police caught Noyes on charges of first-degree harassment and false imprisonment.
The terrified woman was allegedly forced to watch with Noye as she was threatened whenever she tried to look away from the TV miniseries Roots.
Noye forced the white woman to watch the 9-hour show, which describes the ancestral line of Alex Haley, “so she could better understand her racism,” said a police complaint.
The 52-year-old even threatened to “kill her and spread her body parts across Interstate 380 on the way to Chicago” when the woman attempted to look or move away.
Roots, which was written in 1976 by Alex Haley and aired on TV the following year, follows the hardships of an African American family. It also documents the treatment of slaves by the members of the Klu Klux Klan and shows mutilations, rape, and beatings.
The 9-hour show remains the third most-watched US telecast of all time. The book and miniseries were important in starting the discussion about the legacy of slavery and race in the country.
One internet user commented: “Yeah yeah yeah, got it! What happened to the lady? Did she have to escape, did he let her go, did she have to be rescued? We don’t need a synopsis of a 40 year old drama we DO need to know what happened to this woman!”
Another wrote: “The show was big in the 70’s, but it’s rarely on TV here anymore since Haley settled out that plagerism suit and basically admitted the whole thing was made up.”
A third added: “So.. after the movie?? Did he point to the door and wish her well? Was there a quiz at the end? Did she decide she wanted to stay???”
