A woman was left in shock after coming across her boyfriend in a restaurant years after his family led her to believe that he had passed away.
As Rachel from Australia revealed, she was 18 when she met her then-21-year-old boyfriend at a local bar and fell in love with him.
While everything was working out fine for the pair, the man returned home with a broken arm one night according to ABC. He then pleaded with Rachel to lend him $1,000 because he claimed to have trouble paying for the bills.
After a few months, the couple decided to end their relationship and Rachel demanded her money back. While the man paid off $300 of his debt, he appeared to have gone missing soon after that. In addition, the items from the couple’s shared place started disappearing.
“Furniture was gone, bed was gone, everything was gone. The initial story was he’d gone to rehab in Queensland,” the woman said in an interview.
After doing some digging, Rachel discovered the man owed over $2,000 to several of his friends. That’s when her ex’s mother spoke to her and told her the man wasn’t missing but was killed by a gang he owed money to.
“It sounds stupid in retrospect, but you don’t have any reason to question it. If I called you and told you my mum I’d died, you wouldn’t be like, ‘give me a death certificate,’” Rachel added.
Two years after the alleged death of her ex-boyfriend, Rachel visited the pub where his brother used to work only to hear from one employee that her ex was still alive. After requesting to see him, however, she was told to leave the premises.
Unsure what to do next, Rachel took the matter to the police but they simply told her it would be her word against his in the court.
Later on, the mother of her ex-boyfriend texted Rachel and scolded her for ‘causing a scene’ at the restaurant where her son worked.
Not willing to deal with all the crazy stuff any longer, Rachel moved on and forgot about her ex’s debt.
Much to her surprise, however, she came across the man who owed her $700 once again after a few years have passed by.
“We made eye contact, and you could see he recognized me. I was like ‘Long time no see!’ And he went, ‘Oh yeah, it has been a long time,’” she explained.
After confronting him about the money, the man allegedly changed his story and said he didn’t remember her before making his getaway.
