Two teen sisters have come up with an idea to share an early first dance with their terminally ill father who will sadly not get to live long enough to see them get married.
The bittersweet surprise was planned by 41-year-old mother Nicole Halbert and her two daughters, Kaylee and Ashlee, who wanted their father, 51-year-old Jason, to experience a part of their future weddings before passing away.
After he was diagnosed with stage 4 brain cancer, Jason had no option but to start saying his goodbyes to his loving family.
As for the three girls in his life, they started planning a surprise of their own to make sure Jason experiences escorting his daughters to the altar and sharing the first dance with them.
“Your heart stops, you can’t hear, your breath becomes shallow. How were we supposed to tell our daughters? How were we supposed to plan our future?” Nicole said of the time they received the dire news.
“We have raised two daddy’s girls and I was about to break their hearts. Their future suddenly looked very different. The dreams they had of their daddy walking them down the aisle had come to a screeching halt.
“The certain songs they’ve played hundreds of times while imagining themselves swirling around a dance floor, in the perfect dress, in the arms of the first man they ever loved, suddenly took on new meaning.”
So instead of recreating moments like usual, the teen girls decided to don a wedding dress and pre-create the unforgettable memories.
During the photo shoot at Olde Dobbin Station in Texas, the father was proudly embracing his daughters who broke into tears as they shared their ‘first dance’ with him. Jason also walked his daughters down the aisle.
The bittersweet moment was caught on camera by professional photographer Shalonda Chaddock and videographer Michael Shea who made sure that the girls would have special pictures and videos to remember their father by.
“The day of the dance, the sun was shining through gray rain clouds, sunlight mixing with rain showers. I realized, afterwards, how appropriate the weather was for this day,” Nicole added.
“That is what we’ve been doing through this whole journey, trying to find the light among the darkness, the sunshine in the rain. There was laughter and tears but, in the end, there was an everlasting memory.”
