Doctors managed to save a man after they administered 15 cans of beer into his stomach!
The bizarre occurred at General Hospital in Vietnam, and to save 48-year-old Nguyen Van Nhat from alcohol poisoning, doctors administered five liters of beer.
According to Dr. Le Van Lam, the level of methanol in the patient’s blood was more than 1,100 times higher than the normal limit.
Medics transfused one liter of beer to slow down his liver’s processing of methanol. He was given one can of beer every hour!
After 15 cans of beer were administered, the patient was finally conscious. Which left people wondering how does giving more alcohol help when treating alcohol poisoning?
There are two types of alcohol: methanol and ethanol.
Ethanol is commonly found in wine, beer, and spirits. It doesn’t make people drunk in small doses but it can make you sick in large doses.
On the other hand, methanol is created when making homemade spirits. According to Vice, it is more dangerous than the other type and can result in blindness or even death.
Methanol oxidizes to form formaldehyde which becomes formic acid – this is what made Mr. Nhat unconscious.
Alcohol continues to be released into the bloodstream even when you stopped drinking, causing methanol poisoning.
Because body prioritizes breaking down ethanol over methanol, doctors administered beer to the patient to slow down the toxic effects of methanol.
Dr. Lam also explained that this gave doctors enough time to perform dialysis before the 48-year-old suffered harmful effects from alcohol poisoning.
“Absorption of methanol is rapid, but the onset of metabolic toxic features may be delayed for several hours, particularly if co-ingested with ethanol which delays methanol metabolism due to competitive inhibition,” the Public Health England stated.
