We all will agree that bears do look adorable, but they have always been a trouble maker for beekeepers.
They love honey so much that they never mind going ‘off-limits’ to get some of it.
They also raid beehives and create destruction worth thousands.
This is the reason, many beekeepers try different ways to keep them away from beehives. And some beekeepers like Ibrahim Sedef introduce new and interesting ways to do so.
As per DHA, Ibrahim Sedef is an agricultural engineer. He lives in Trabzon, Turkey and works in beekeeping. He has been struggling for a while now with bears that trash the hives while trying to get honey from them.
He tried to prevent bears and protect the hives by securing them with cages. He also put foods like fruits, bread, and honey itself, so that the bears won’t feed directly from the hives.
But none of the ideas worked for him and few of the hives were still found damaged.
Sedef installed photo trap cameras in his bee farm, which tracked the bears roaming in his farm.
He did this so that he can learn more about the behavior and movement of the bears who invaded his farm on a regular basis.
On the process of finding a way of outsmarting these lickerish animals, a brilliant idea struck in Sedef’s mind.
As he knew that bears clearly have great taste for honey, he chose to turn them into honey testers.
He placed a table on his farm, with 4 different kinds of honey on it and that definitely helped him come up with some interesting facts.
As he told DHA, bears always tasted the famous Turkish honey, Anzer, first. Which means they are drawn by its smell?
The bears made an expensive choice with Anzer honey, as it costs more than $300 for 2 pounds. Further, it was noticed that sometimes they didn’t even touch the Cherry Blossom honey.
