In the midst of crisis, humanity can act in such a way as to ignite a beacon of hope that can be inspiring for all.
That was certainly the case when quarantined Italians in Naples chanted “don’t give up” with each other on their balconies and also sang rousing football songs in order to lift the spirits of those who are suffering through the coronavirus crisis.
The heartwarming scene happened in the Casoria commune in the southern city of Naples. The residents living in several housing blocks joined their voices and shouted their defiance against the disease that is scything through their country.
The video shows the Neapolitan locals singing: “We will stay at home.
“Tonight the whole of Casoria are united in chorus.
“The people will never give up so come on Naples!”
A local named Susy Unica Silvestri uploaded the video to her Facebook account where it has been shared more than 10,000 times.
The residents were enthusiastically belting out the verses of their local team Società Sportiva Calcio Napoli who are in Serie A which is on the top tier of Italian soccer.
“People like us will never give up; people like us will never give up; people like us; people like us; people like us will never give up,” they chanted in unison.
“Come on Italy! Come on Naples!
“Forever!
“We are all united.
“Come out on your balconies, out on your balconies! Come out on your balconies, out on your balconies!
“The virus that is facing us will not defeat us… The virus that is facing us will not defeat us!”
Other Italian cities have also come up with their own versions of community choruses such as Siena in Tuscany enthusiastically singing a version of “Canto Della Verbena” (And while Siena sleeps).
While Naples has not been as hard-hit as other cities, with only 95 infections as of March 12, the Italian government has still placed citizens under strict “stay at home rules.”
With more than 15,000 confirmed cases as of March 12 and 1,000 deaths, the majority of them being in the north of the country, the government is hoping the restrictive measures will slow down the spread of the disease.
People can only leave home for work, groceries, health reasons, or to provide care to the elderly and youngsters.
