Two brothers from Hixson, Tennessee bought hand sanitizer, surgical masks, and antibacterial wipes for $25000 and then sold them for as much as $70 each amid coronavirus.
Matt and Noah Colvin bought the items from Dollar Tree, Walmart, Staples, and Home Depot and started selling them on their Amazon online store.
They sold 200 bottles of hand sanitizer for as much as $70 each before Amazon shut them down.
The brothers started receiving death threats for selling hand sanitizer for as much as $70 each after their story went viral online and people called them ‘greedy’ and ‘selfish’.
The brothers now have 17,700 bottles with them that they can’t sell anywhere.
Matt Colvin told WRCB-TV: “The bulk of it was purchased just driving around to retail stores in the Chattanooga area. It was crazy money.”
He defended him by saying they had no profits because of the cost of delivering it to customers and Amazon’s commission.
He said: “Just because it cost me $2 in the store doesn’t mean it’s not going to cost me $16 to get it to your door.”
He said he was just running a business and was getting paid for the public service.
After Amazon pulled his items from the Amazon store, the brothers were left with 18,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and thousands of packages of wipes that they can’t sell anywhere now.
He said: “I’m not looking to be in a situation where I make the front page of the news for being that guy who hoarded 20,000 bottles of sanitizer that I’m selling for 20 times what they cost me.”
The brothers have deleted their social media accounts after the incident. Colvin said: “The amount of hate has been unreal. It’s been a disaster. People are tweeting guillotines at me.”
After receiving the backlash online and getting death threats, the brothers have now decided to donate the unsold items to health agencies or a church.
