Iran has recently issued its serious warning about Covid-19, suggesting millions could be dead in the Islamic Republic in case the public keeps on ignoring health guidance.
A medical doctor who is also a state television journalist gave this warning post Shiite faithful entered the courtyards of 2 major shrines that have been closed due to coronavirus fears.
Iran said that it has temporarily freed almost 85,000 prisoners including the political detainees to avoid the spread of Covid-19.
This comes after the number of death in the county spiked by 15 resulting in 13% increase.
Coronavirus claimed the lives of 135 more Iranians, which resulted in a total of 988 deaths amid 16,169 infections.
That is according to Kianoush Jahanpur, the spokesperson of Iran Health Ministry, who have this figure at one of the televised news conferences.
Gholamhossein Esmaili, Judiciary spokesperson, said that half of the prisoners who have been released amidst Covid-19 were security-related prisoners.
He added that they have taken precautionary measures in the jails to confront coronavirus outbreak. More than 70,000 prisoners have been released from jails as per Iran’s statement.
The United Nations had warned that prisoners have been infected in disease-ridden and overcrowded jails in Iran, and called for every political prisoner to be released. However, when these prisoners have to return to jails is unknown.
The Covid-19 outbreak in Iran has been amongst the worst outbreaks outside of China. Iran has been criticized widely for the way it is handling the outbreak, including for Iran’s reluctance to shut down the holy pilgrimage sites.
Many cases of coronavirus in the Middle East have been associated with Iran, and several countries have shut down travel.
