A 26-year-old British man has been arrested for failing to self-isolate after arriving on the Isle of Man.
He is now facing a £10,000 fine or three months in jail, according to the Metro.
A self-governing British Crown dependency, the Isle of Man recently introduced new guidelines to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
Police officers on the island now have the authority to arrest anyone who fails to self-isolate after arriving even if they don’t show any symptoms.
“We currently have one male in Police Custody for failing to adhere to the new legislation requiring him to self isolate,” police on the island said in a statement.
“Please follow the guidance issued by the Government and think about the safety of the community. This is an ever evolving situation and it is important we act in the best interests of keeping people safe,” it added.
Howard Quayle, the Chief Minister for the Isle of Man, also announced emergency measures and said: “We are taking action to protect our residents and to ensure life can continue as normal as possible during this unpredictable time.
“We are advising against all non-essential travel off the Island, and the measures being introduced from tomorrow are aimed at minimising the risk of those arriving in the Island infecting our population.”
The Isle of Man has confirmed its first case of coronavirus. According to a statement, the patient had traveled from Spain and the government will start ‘contact tracing.’
“A patient on the #isleofman who had recently returned from #Spain has tested positive for #coronavirus. The @PublicHealthIOM team has been in touch provide support, and will start contact tracing. Chief Minister @HowardQuayleMHK will give a full media briefing today,” the Isle of Man Government wrote on Twitter.
