This weekend saw the beaches across California flooded by people coming in for sunbaths even though Governor Gavin Newsom ordered Californians to stay indoors to help break the transmission chain of COVID-19.
An order was issued by Mr. Newsom on Thursday, March 19, that urged all Californian citizens to stay in their homes until further orders.
By doing so, the governor actually asked a population of 40 million people to stay under a sort of lockdown but it looks like not everyone likes to obey the governor.
“CA is issuing a statewide, mandatory STAY AT HOME order. Those that work in critical sectors should go to work,” said Newsom’s tweet.
“We need to meet this moment and flatten the curve together.”
If you take a look at the photos from Huntington Beach clicked this weekend, you can see how seriously the Americans have taken the governor’s order.
Despite an open order to remain at home, people are coming to beaches and other public spaces to eat, drink, sunbathe, swim, surf, ride bikes and do a host of other things you are not supposed to do during a pandemic.
The instructions on the website of California state dictate that the citizens can go out for exercise or to get fresh air but it is recommended to maintain at least 6 ft. distance from others so as to practice proper social distancing.
It has been established that a typical flu virus can travel 6-8 ft. in the air due to coughing and sneezing. However, the latest photos from California show the people clearly violating these instructions.
According to Harvard Health, social distancing is described as “maintaining enough distance between yourself and another person to reduce the risk of breathing in droplets that are produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes.”
These photos from California have come a week after PEOPLE reported that the beaches of Florida were packed with tourists despite the health and safety instructions issued by the government to adopt social distancing.
So far, there have been 33,018 confirmed cases of coronavirus in the US and the deadly disease has claimed 428 lives in the country.
In California, the total number of corona cases stands at 1,849 with 33 deaths while in Florida, there are 1,003 affected people with 12 deaths.
