A man from New York revealed that he hid his coronavirus symptoms from hospital staff so he could visit his wife in the maternity ward.
The man admitted to hiding his symptoms after his wife started to develop signs of COVID-19 shortly after giving birth to their baby.
The incident happened at the Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, a part of the University of Rochester Medicine and Rochester Regional Health group.
“The couple and their baby were asked to quarantine, pending testing results, to protect the community and were discharged from the hospital,” health officials said in a statement.
They were both isolated from other patients throughout their stay in the hospital. So far, no hospital staff have tested positive for the deadly virus. One who developed symptoms and was quarantined tested negative.
UR Medicine recently announced that stricter measures would be implemented on visitors. Hospital workers will screen all hospital visitors for symptoms to ‘maximize safety for patients and staff.’
“In keeping with guidelines issued by the Monroe County Department of Public Health, UR Medicine hospitals have implemented a zero-visitation policy to further our efforts to protect patients and staff from the spread of COVID-19,” UR Medicine’s website reads.
All staff, visitors and parents are also required to wear medical masks while in public areas in the facilities, the Democrat & Chronicle reported.
“It was purely an honour system before,” said spokesperson Chip Partner. “Now we’re adding the temperature check.”
US Medicine started banning most hospital visitors as other New York hospitals do the same to stop the spread of coronavirus to medical staff and vulnerable patients.
