A nurse and several other healthcare workers were attacked by the family of a patient who had died from coronavirus after the staff refused to let them see the deceased due to health concerns.
The incident occurred at IMSS Zone General Hospital #48 in Mexico City where the family of a deceased COVID-19 patient was told they couldn’t see them after their passing.
Filming the saddening moment the family launched an attack on the hospital staff, including a nurse named Daniel Zamorano, was another healthcare worker who was seen running away from the scene when the family walked away and began approaching her.
After the attack, Zamorano took to Facebook to open up about the assault and explain why they can’t let family members of deceased COVID-19 patients see their bodies.
“Family, friends and neighbors are always tough. Today four men and two women beat me because their relative died from Covid19,” he wrote.
“They had not seen him since Monday because he is isolated and for the same reason the patient has a protocol to follow. He can’t be released like this. He has to be cremated. He is not like another deceased … You will not see him again if he dies inside a hospital.”
Zamorano also took the opportunity to criticize some of his fellow countrymen who refuse to acknowledge the real impact of the pandemic that resulted in nearly 2 million confirmed cases worldwide so far.
“This awaits us? The pandemic has just started in Mexico, a third world country, a country that does not believe in the existence of the virus, a country that criticizes medical work, a country that if the government does not do what people want, [they] hit, shout, spit,” he wrote.
After the nurse’s response went viral, Zamorano appeared to have apologized for speaking boldly and blamed it on stress related to working on the frontlines of the battle against COVID-19.
“I realize that my case can be an example that the stress and anxiety generated by #Covid19 can cause incredible chaos and that the security is not enough for what is coming,” he added.
