Solving jigsaw puzzles can take on a whole new dimension when you have a pet in the house, particularly cats.
But what can drive these cats to interfere in such a fun activity?
“Boredom and excess energy are two common reasons for undesirable behavior in pets,” Pamela Reid, Ph.D., CAAB, Vice President of The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) Behavioral Sciences Team, said.
“While families are busy working and learning from home, it’s important for cats (and dogs) to do the same! In addition to physical exercise, there are many fun and free ways to give [them] a mental workout from the comfort of your house.
”
Reid says you can start by giving treats and meals through food puzzle toys. It also helps if they have objects to explore like paper shopping bags (with handles cut off), cardboard bottles, or bottle caps that entice them to explore.
“[Also, consider] training your cat to learn useful behaviors and fun tricks, like ‘sit’, ‘come’, hand target, ‘shake’ and fetch,” Reid added.
You can also try positioning bird and squirrel feeders so that your cat can easily observe them. Even playing clips of birds and squirrels playing on TV may do the trick!
