As the novel coronavirus continues to rage on, the shortage of personal protective equipments (PPE) are becoming a serious issue for countries around the world. Although whether regular citizens require PPE is debatable, there is a consensus that all the healthcare workers need one.
However, as the pandemic shows little sign of subsiding, even wealthy countries like the United Kingdom are worried that there may not be enough PPEs for their NHS workers.
Many individuals have been contributing in their own ways to support their healthcare workers. This time, the costume designers from some of the most celebrated movies and tv shows in the UK have joined forces to show solidarity.
Designers from productions such as “Downton Abbey” and “Star Wars” decided to make and distribute medical scrubs. The woman who initiated this movement was Dulcie Scott.
Scott is an experienced and respected designer among her peers. Her most famous work was on “Downton Abbey”. She also worked as a supervisor for the BBC for their production of “His Dark Materials”.
After she thought of helping the NHS with her skills, she contacted other peers. Most of them were also furloughed or taking a break as virtually all productions have been halted due to the pandemic. All her colleagues joined in on the effort.
To cover for the cost of purchasing the materials, Scott began an online fundraiser. With a set goal £65,000, Scott and her team managed to raise more than £51,000 as of today.
Moreover, the number of volunteers for this campaign skyrocketed from 10 to 150. Every one who joined call their personal friends who they knew were taking breaks from their work, who all gladly joined.
The designers who have signed up now reads like a list of nominees for an award ceremony. From “Batman” and “Guardians of the Galaxy” to the English National Opera, costume designers with different backgrounds all vowed to help.
An actual Academy winner has also joined the effort. John Casali won an Oscar for his sound mixing efforts on the movie “Bohemian Rhapsody”. Although he can’t design a scrub, Casali said that he will deliver the scrubs to where its needed with his van.
It is lifting to see that people from all walks of life are doing their share in the fight against the global pandemic. Share with us your thoughts in the comments, and be sure to follow us on Facebook for more articles like this one.
