A 34-year-old man with Down’s syndrome who was given only 24 hours to live has finally been reunited with his mother after he managed to beat coronavirus.
Ben McCafferty was finally discharged from a hospital in West Yorkshire after fighting against the deadly infection for two weeks.
A heartwarming video shows the moment Ben was reunited with his family.
His stepfather Neil told the camera: “Ben came in a fortnight ago really poorly and we didn’t expect him to survive. We were told the survival rate was going to be very low.
“But with the staff and the help and the support that he has had, he has come through and he looks to be fully fit and raring to go.”
He added: “He’s looking forward to going home and seeing his mum.”
The video then showed Ben walking down the corridor when he saw his loving mom Di Margerison. Then they embraced each other in a heartwarming reunion.
Ms. Margerison stayed with Ben during his first night in the hospital but because of restrictions due to coronavirus outbreak, she was unable to be with her son.
The clip showed her holding Ben’s arm as he thanked the NHS staff for taking care of him. The family then received a warm round of applause as they walked out of the facility.
Karen Dawber, the head of Nursing at Bradford Teaching Hospitals, said that Ben hadn’t been expected to survive another day.
Ms. Margerison told the Yorkshire Evening Post: “I didn’t think he would make it. It was the longest we had ever been apart. The care he received at the hospital saved his life.”
One internet user commented: “After reading all the depressing stories about Covid 19 this one has just lifted my spirits. So happy for that lovely young man and his family.”
Another wrote: “A heartwarming story to brighten up the day just when you thought the news could not get any worse. May he go on and lead a healthy life as much as possible.”
