A comedian has found herself in a hilariously embarrassing situation that even she could never have dreamed of for her skit.
She discovered that she had been calling her neighbor by the wrong name for the past 14 years. Yes, you heard that right, it’s been almost a decade-and-a-half and she had unknowingly gotten the name wrong the whole time.
If you thought you weren’t good with names, you have nothing on this woman.
Stephanie Aird, who runs the comedy Facebook page Stephanie LOLS and lives in Hartlepool, County Durham, related in a video that she was friendly with her next-door neighbors and whenever they chatted over the garden fence she would call the woman “Mavis.”
She would even send Christmas cards addressed to Mavis and George (Mavis’ husband who recently passed away). She would then receive a card in return signed “lots of love, Mavis, and George.”
But when George, who was in his 80s, passed away last month, Aird was mortified to find out from another neighbor that the woman was actually named “Sylvia,” not “Mavis.” The revelation left Aird “gobsmacked.”
She mentioned: “Every year I’ve sent Christmas cards, ‘Merry Christmas Mavis and George.’ I’ve had them back of them saying, ‘Lots of love from Mavis and George.’”
After George’s passing, a conversation with another neighbor brought the name gaffe to light.
Aird continued: “I was talking to another lady over the road and I go: ‘How is Mavis doing?’… She said: ‘Who’s Mavis?’
‘I said, ‘you what? My neighbor, Mavis.’ She said, ‘you haven’t gotten a neighbor called Mavis.’ I said, ‘aye I have. George’s wife, Mavis.’
“She goes, ‘do you mean Sylvia?’ I go, ‘who’s Sylvia?’ She said, ‘George’s wife.’ I said, ‘I’ve called her Mavis for 14 years.’”
Now Aird is stumped on what to do next. She ended the video by saying she was too embarrassed to go outside because she might run into Sylvia.
Nevertheless, the Internet found her video, which was captioned “Here is why you should remember your neighbor’s name. Mortified.”, hilarious enough and it quickly gained 1.8 million views on her Facebook page. It was next uploaded to Reddit and users there have also been tickled pink by the story.
One user wrote: “I have laughed at this no end.”
Another said: “This is the best thing I’ve ever seen! Am f*****g crying.”
We can hardly blame Aird, though, because Sylvia never bothered to correct her in all that time. What’s even funnier, though, is that millions of other people know Aird’s conundrum but Sylvia herself, who’s just next door, doesn’t.
