With the world in the grip of the coronavirus pandemic, people have been forced into mandated lockdowns and work-from-home arrangements.
But while people may be binge-watching their way through some backlogged to-watch lists, what many don’t realize is that the coronavirus has inflicted one more casualty for the near future: the lack of new TV shows and movies.
This was put into perspective when the upcoming Uncharted movie stopped filming on the very first day because of the coronavirus. Spider-Man star Tom Holland revealed how everyone was sent home on the first day of filming due to safety concerns about the coronavirus.
Holland explained to Jimmy Kimmel from his London home that they were all hyped to start filming but the plug got pulled.
“I’m not too sure,” said Holland, when Kimmel asked if Spider-Man would begin filming in July as originally planned. “I was in Berlin making a film called Uncharted with Mark Wahlberg, and we were all ready to go and we went to set for Day One shooting, and then we got shut down and we all got sent home. So whether we shoot [Uncharted] first or if we shoot Spider-Man first, I’m unclear.”
The Uncharted movie has been announced as far back as 2008 and while anticipation was high at its making, it’s really no surprise that filming was stopped due to the current global crisis. If anything, at least people know that they were serious about making the film.
While details have been sketchy, what is known is that Ruben Fleischer (Venom and Zombieland: Double Tap) will direct the film. Tom Holland plays the younger Nathan Drake and Mark Wahlberg is Victor “Sully” Sullivan. Antonio Banderas is also in the film but it’s unknown what role he’ll play.
Holland described how much he liked the script for Uncharted. Speaking to IGN, he said: “I think what Uncharted offers that most video games films don’t is that it’s an origin story to the games.
So if you played the games, you haven’t seen what’s going to happen in the film. And if you haven’t played the games, you’re going to enjoy the film because it’s information that everyone else is getting at the same time.
But I’m super excited to make that movie and it’s been a long time coming.”
During his interview with Kimmel, Holland also expressed the same sentiment when they discussed both Uncharted and Spider-Man.
“Both movies are being made and they’re both really strong and the scripts are fantastic so whatever happens, happens but I’m ready to play both. So, ready to go.”
