Maatje Benassi is a reservist at the US Army, a strong mother of two children.
And she is currently hated by the Chinese online community, who has called her the original sinner bringing the coronavirus to China. This already far-fetched claims has had a destructive momentum in the span of her family life, as they had to shut down their every communicative media accounts as well as their social media. She has given an interview, in it which she has said: “It’s like waking up from a bad dream going into a nightmare day after day,”
She and her husband Matt are still on active duty.
She is currently a civilian employee at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia working as a security officer. Matt was an Air Force officer, and currently works at the Pentagon at a relative post to the Air Force. They should have been protected due to their identities and status, but the cyber bullying has amounted to such a state that they have been expressing signs of helplessness and depression, to which Maajte has tearfully called out as a blatant dishonor and something similar to murder: “I want everybody to stop harassing me, because this is cyberbullying to me and it’s gone way out of hand,”
The couple tried everything within their power to actually take the videos down by themselves, with their methods going as far back as employing attorneys and asking the police for help, but to no avail.
The whole incident has been ongoing since March, in which the contents of these conspiracies involved her participation in the Military World Games that was held in Wuhan in late October last year.
Maatje Benassi competed in the cycling competition there, suffering an accident on the final lap that left her with a fractured rib and a concussion.
She was a cyclist in the competition, and was unlucky enough to have suffered from an accident in her final lap at the time, coming out with fractured ribs and a mild concussion. But little she was prepared to meet the conspiracy theory that out of those hundreds of US military athletes, she had to be the one who gave China its very own bioweapon, somehow simmering in mystery for 2 months and then suddenly coming out as a pandemic.
As gullible as it sounds, lots of people across the world are buying it, even though they are face with the fact that the couple has never tested for the coronavirus in the first place.
Maatje has resignatedly said that “the damage is done, I know it [will] never be the same. Every time you’re going to Google my name, it will pop up as patient zero.”
