A 40-year-old woman with Down’s Syndrome has defied her doctors and made a miraculous recovery from coronavirus.
Clare Wakeford was on a ventilator for two weeks while her loved ones feared the worst. But she was cheered by nurses and doctors the moment she wheeled out from the hospital after her six-week stay. “I’m back,” she expressed.
Clare was reunited with her sister, 47-year-old Lisa Scarborough.
“When Clare went into intensive care we really thought that was it,” Lisa said. “We were hoping and praying she’d recover and she battled and fought with all her strength and has beaten this horrible, nasty disease.
“She went to hell and back but we were always there for her and to have her back home with us now is just such a great feeling for all of us.”
She added: “When you think she was on a ventilator and in intensive care for two weeks and she has Down’s Syndrome – what she has achieved is even more fantastic.”
Clare has lived with her sister Lisa, her husband Dave, and their two children, since 2019. However, she was admitted to Epsom Hospital on March 20 after complaining of a ‘frog in her throat.’
She was then diagnosed with coronavirus a few days later and placed in an induced coma on a ventilator.
Two weeks later, Clare was brought out of her coma. It also happened to be her 40th birthday.
“I got the call they had brought her round on her birthday of all days and the staff said she was finally awake. I burst into tears. It was a such a feeling of relief,” Lisa expressed.
Nurse Sasha Bethel also said: “Just to see everyone clapping and cheering has taken a little bit of my heart — it’s really touched me and I can’t stop crying. Clare was more worried about us than herself and she was always making sure we were OK.”
She added: “She was the longest patient we’d had here with coronavirus and she’s now gone home.”
