In Holmes County, located in Mississippi, the coronavirus pandemic has introduced another serious threat – Hunger.
It is among the poorest counties in America. According to the reports from the US Census Bureau, over 33% of its population lives in poverty.
The children in the Holmes Country Consolidated School District are eligible for free meals from the school. This is the only nutritious food that many students get according to a fifth-grade maths teacher, Jaleel King.
He is a teacher at Goodman-Pickens Elementary School, and when the pandemic forced the school to close down, he sprung into action.
This teacher drives around in a yellow school bus from Monday to Friday, delivering free breakfast and lunch to the students. And he does all this in between taking daily online classes.
The trips he makes are part of a district-wide initiative to feed the students. The district delivers around 6000 meals a day across the country. Some 70 buses make the trips to ensure the students are fed.
Kings who grew up in the county said in certain cases; these free meals are the only food the kids get throughout the day. Since he does not get to take the normal classes, these trips provide a great opportunity for him to stay connected with his students.
King said that he loves his kid, and he is the kind of teacher who loves to give high-fives and hugs. So not being able to do that is disappointing for him but he gets see their faces and help them out, which is something he really enjoys.
Additionally, these trips have also helped King to develop a strong relationship with the parents of these kids. He said that they check up on each other through phones.
He constantly asks them whether or not they have everything that they need. He loves how appreciative parents have been throughout the whole situation.
