Perhaps it was fitting that a documentary that seemed rather mundane at first somehow became a cult phenomenon in the era of Covid-19.
From the insinuation that an animal conservationist fed her ex-husband to big cats to the cult-like personal zoos, Tiger King topped the Netflix most watched list in the US for weeks.
However, the series was not without its detractors. Some of those who were filmed said that their words have been taken out of context and distorted. Others criticized the sensationalistic approach that the producers of the show took.
The Hollywood Reporter reported that the producers of the massively successful series are working on a sequel to the docuseries. Specifically, they envision the additions to be a season 2 of Tiger King that focuses on different individuals related with big cats.
In particular, Hollywood Reporter cited Dr. James Liu as their source. Liu is both a working veterinarian and a field biologist. Liu relayed to the media source that the producers of Tiger King have been researching about a fateful night that ended the Siegfried and Roy show in 2003.
A popular duo in the Las Vegas performing scene, their show was put to an abrupt end in 2003 when a mauling incident happened. In a twist that is befitting of both the docuseries and current times, Horn – the handler who got severely injured – passed away last week due to Covid-19.
Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, the producers of Tiger King, have previously indicated that they wanted to continue their series. Goode is a renowned animal conservationist himself, who founded the Turtle Conservancy in 2009.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Goode said that Tiger King was his way of discussing the issue of conservation from a new angle. Although he admitted that Netflix did an amazing job of crafting a series worthy of binge-watching, Goode said his goal has always been protecting the wildlife.
A spokesperson for Goode Films confirmed the words of Dr. Liu in a call with The Hollywood Reporter. She said that the sequel will be a much more traditional approach to the issue. Netflix has not commented on the project as of this writing.
