A 3-day-old baby passed away in hospital after his mother tested positive for coronavirus before she gave birth.
When Coolio Carl Justin was born in the Princess of Wales Hospital in South Wales, he had a low heart rate. An inquest heard that the newborn was transferred to Singleton Hospital in Swansea where he later passed away.
The main cause of the baby’s death was severe hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, meaning the brain is starved of oxygen and blood, according to BBC. Maternal coronavirus was also listed as a secondary cause.
Coolio was three days old when he died on May 5.
Senior coroner’s officer Lauren Howitt said that “the mother was found to be Covid-19 positive soon after delivery.”
No post-mortem examination was done and officers were asked by the coroner to investigate the case of the death before the next hearing.
“I pass on my condolences to the family in these most sad and depressing circumstances,” he said.
A funeral of only ten people will be held for Coolio.
“’It’s heartbreaking for the family and our hearts go out to them,” said Steve Smith, Mayor of Maesteg. “It’s terrible to lose any family member during this crisis but a three day-old baby is just awful. But this is a close knit caring community and we will do our best for them.”
Labor councilor Ceri Reeves also said: “The loss of a baby is particularly tragic. We look after our own here and the community is there for the family.”
This comes only days after a 6-week-old baby passed away from coronavirus. According to NHS England, the baby died on May 3.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the family during this difficult time. Rest in peace, Coolio!
