An Indian pregnant woman traveling across India have given birth midway, and then proceeded to walk 160 kilometers with her newborn to the nearest city, because she had no other means of transport but her own two feet to trust.
The woman was walking with her husband and their four other children from the city of Nashik, in Maharashtra, to the town of Satna in the adjoining state of Madhya Pradesh.
Somewhere along the trip, the woman stopped and gave birth to a baby girl.A few days later, she was stopped by Kavita Kanesh, an official at a checkpoint in Madhya Pradesh.
“She just rested for about one and a half to two hours after she delivered. The family had no money, no means of transport, no one was giving them a lift,” Kanesh said.Kanesh said the baby was born on May 5, four days before they reached the checkpoint.
Currently, a local Indian news media news outlet have said: “Shakuntala, wife of a migrant labourer, decided to risk the 1,000km march from Nashik to Satna in the ninth month of pregnancy.
On May 5, she gave birth to a baby on the roadside, rested for an hour… and then marched on.
When the group staggered into Bijasan town on the home side of the Maharashtra-MP border on Saturday, a police inspector noticed the newborn in her arms and was “moved beyond words”.“I saw a woman holding a newborn and went to check if she needed assistance,” said Bijasan police check-post incharge Kavita Kanesh.
She was stunned to learn that Shakuntala had delivered on Agra Mumbai national highway, assisted by four of her women companions.”
The family is one of the many victims and actually a lucky member from the casualties plaguing India, as their former city had no means for them to earn money.
The woman was taken to a local hospital to get proper treatment and medical supplies.
More and more residents have come up for an attempt to leave Indian cities and actually return back to their main homeland since the lockdown restrictions have been taken place, putting metropolitan areas to a virtual standstill. As public transport is cancelled, cases like this is set to become more often as many resort to their own foot.
India has so far recorded more than 78,000 coronavirus cases and 2,551 deaths, according to data compiled by John Hopkins University.
