The San Franciscan fire that went ablaze overnight has resulted in the loss of Pier 45, according to the city’s fire department on Saturday afternoon official statement.
150 and more firefighters and relevant personnel contributed to help put out the fire that supposedly destroyed a quarter of the pier at Fisherman’s Wharf. The warehouse on the pier had been destroyed since the fire first was observed and reported to relevant authorities on 4am.
The fire was contained by early afternoon on the same day, but firefighting personnel will be stationed throughout the pier for containment, and even through Memorial Day weekend, to ensure that none of the other vulnerabilities fall prey to leftover fire or tinder.
The pier was close in proximity to number of tourist spots in San Francisco, namely Pier 39 where group of restaurants and tourist shopping venues are situated.
It has been known that one of the firefighters sustained an injury during the process. The causes for the fire are still not known, and the fire department has been very passionate to contain the fire within the current area of inferno, as the whole pier was victimless and fully evacuated. The fire caused a partial building collapse on the southern part of the pier, spread to two buildings on the pier and was in danger of spreading to a third, fire officials say.
“The SS Jeremiah O’Brien, a World War II ship based at Pier 45, would have been lost in the fire without the assistance of fire boats”, Baxter said.
Fire boat three did an amazing job and “defended our history, specifically on Memorial Day weekend.
It saved that vessel,” he said. “When firefighters arrived, the flames were literally lapping over the Jeremiah O’Brien,” he said, “They literally saved the O’Brien.”
Several other fireboats also positioned themselves around the wharf and helped fight the fire.
The warehouse contained a large fish processing operation for the northern California crab fleet, KPIX reported. The fire department is working with the city’s Department of Building Inspection and the San Francisco Port Authority to determine the structural integrity of the pier.It remains unclear whether anyone was in the building, which is sometimes used by homeless people, officials said.
Investigators are looking through surveillance footage in an effort to determine the cause of the fire.If you liked this article, please LIKE SHARE AND COMMENT below! And don’t forget to check our other articles along the way!
