Madonna is really not the best celebrity when it comes to social media management in times of crisis.
She has been known to draw criticism from the general public for responses that might be seen a bit out of touch with the public sentiment, or has been coordinated so that it might seem disparately idiosyncratic with the whole general theme of the said public sentiment. And as the United States suffers from one of the worst protest outbreaks across the coasts, she has had to make a Tweet that has yet angered the public. This time, it’s her “tribute” to George Floyd.
The singer on Thursday tweeted a two-minute clip of her adopted son, David Banda dancing to Michael Jackson’s song “They Don’t Care About Us.
” while she is obviously filming the video.
She wrote in the caption: “Brutal murder travels around the world my son David Dances to honor and pay tribute to George and His Family and all Acts of Racism and Discrimination that happen on a daily basis in America.#davidbanda #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd #MichaelJackson.
”The video itself garnered very negative reviews from activists and fellow celebrities alike, as well as the general public.
“Nobody asked Madonna to weigh in today. Not a soul. Unforced errors among public figures have been rampant this month,” wrote April Reign, the creator of the #OscarsSoWhite campaign.TV writer Akilah Green said the video was “worse than that Pepsi can,” referring to an infamous 2017 commercial starring Kendall Jenner that used protest imagery to market the soft drink.
Some even called out Madonna for “ending racism.”
As protests across the country become more violent and continue to produce casualties, the US police force abuse issue becomes stronger, and the legal battles are expected to continue throughout the nationwide turmoil following the arrest of the involved police officer, Derek Chauvin.
Madonna, meanwhile, boasts a history of creating a rather out-of-touch response to social issues, going nowhere further than to look for the singer’s claims that COVID-19 is somehow “the great equalizer” while lying in a milky bath sprinkled with rose petals, inciting public outrage for her words and actions being so dramatically different in a very slim and narrow social context of interpretation.
