The British MPs are mortified and angry after Business Secretary Alok Sharma was visibly ill during today’s morning questioning at the House of Commons.
And now the Secretary has done his test for the coronavirus, with self-isolation to boot coming right after he returned from the Chambers. This is especially alarming, as this was only the second day of the reopening for the MP’s return to the Westminster. The statement from the department of Business reads: ‘Secretary of State Alok Sharma began feeling unwell when in the chamber delivering the second reading of the Corporate Governance and Insolvency Bill. In line with guidance he has been tested for coronavirus and is returning home to self-isolate.’
In the footage from the said questioning, he is seen ostensibly wiping his face with a handkerchief, while Ed Miliband from Labor Business shadow cabinet is seen worryingly passing a glass of water to the Secretary.
MP Toby Perkins from Labour lashed out on Twitter later today saying: ‘This is ridiculous. It was clear that Alok Sharma looked unwell. If there are now fears that he may have COVID19 and he hadn’t already tested negative, it was the height of irresponsibility for him to be in parliament sniffling, sweating and snorting from the despatch box.
’
Labour’s Lisa Nandy also shared her thoughts on Twitter, saying: ‘This is just awful.
The government has stopped MPs from working from home and asked us to return to a building where social distancing is impossible. MPs are travelling home to every part of the country tonight. Reckless doesn’t even begin to describe it.
’
While Labour MP Peter Kyle tweeted: ‘Attempting to drag the MPs most susceptible to a bad COVID outcome into the same space as people dripping with the disease is going to be a standout legacy of Rees-Mogg’s time as Leader of the Commons.’
Mr Miliband, who was in the closest proximity with the ill Secretary and counterpart, sent his ‘best wishes’ to the Business Secretary for a quick recovery, adding: ‘Hope he feels better soon.’
The said incident is bound to incite renewal in the gathering policy, lest it turns out that the Secretary befalls under the category of being infected by the Coronavirus. The British Parliament recently scrapped plans for a digitized voting procedure for the sake of clarity and bureaucratic convenience.
