The protests that began in the streets of America have spread like wildfire all around the globe, filling the once deserted streets with anti-racist protestors.
CNN reported that protests were held in all major cities, including London, Rome, Madrid, Hong Kong and many more.
Around the world, people gathered together under the message of putting an end to systemic racism that is so prevalent in all countries. From physical protests that took place in front of American embassies to destroying the statue of a slave merchant, different people expressed their sentiments in their own ways.
At the background of all these protests are of course looming the risk of Covid-19. In many cases, government issued a general warning against mass congregations of protestors but didn’t crack down on them in violent ways.
In London, CNN reports that thousands of protestors gathered outside the US embassy to protest. While most of the messages focused on Floyd, chants that urged Britain to look back at its history of slavery and imperialism was also a common sight among the protestors.
Perhaps the most visual and symbolic action against racism in England took place at Bristol. Dozens of protestors pulled on the statue of Edward Colston, an infamous slave owner. The destroyed statue was dumped in to the waters at Bristol Harbor.
The monument of Colston was first erected in the late 19th century, and has remained in the center of controversy for a long time. Video footage shows people loudly cheering as the statute came crashing down.
In Madrid, protestors were given permission to protest in front of the US embassy. However, the reportedly 2,000 to 4,000 large crowd soon poured into Puerta del Sol, Madrid’s most famous and busiest square.
The same phenomenon was visible in Rome, where thousands of protestors gathered in its iconic city center to protest racism in the US and around the world including Italy.
Although the large number of protestors made it hard, media reports say that Italian protestors tried to adhere to the basic social distancing rules by some wearing facial masks while many more tried to distance themselves one meter away from each other.
